Computer Skills: Where to Start and What to Learn Next
A clear order for learning: computer basics first, then Microsoft Office, then a specialised skill such as graphic design or programming.
Computer skills are useful in almost every job and study path, and they are easier to learn when you follow a sensible order. This guide is general advice, not a fixed programme.
Step one: the basics. Learn to use the keyboard and mouse comfortably, to create and organise files and folders, to connect to the internet safely, to install and remove programs, and to keep your files backed up. These small habits save a great deal of time later.
Step two: the office programs. Word, Excel and PowerPoint are the programs people use most for documents, tables and presentations. Learn them with real tasks: write a CV in Word, build a simple budget in Excel, and make a short presentation about a topic you like.
Step three: choose a specialised skill. If you enjoy visual work, graphic design programs such as Photoshop teach you to edit images and create designs. If you enjoy logic and building things, programming and web development teach you to create pages and applications. You do not have to learn everything: pick one direction and go deeper.
Practise with small projects. Watching lessons is only half of learning. After each lesson, repeat the steps on your own computer and try a small variation, such as a different design or a different formula.
Stay safe online. Use strong passwords that are different for each account, be careful with links and attachments from people you do not know, and keep your system updated.
